Palmers Brewery Tour
On a recent tour of the south coast I managed to shoehorn a tour of Palmers Brewery in Bridport into the schedule, luckily with my wife being pregnant she offered to drive so I could thoroughly sample the beers on offer. I’ve been keen to go on a brewery tour for a while and it was searching for a brewery to do one at that I hit on the idea of the UK Brewery Tour Map, to help others looking for tours to go on throughout the UK.
Palmers Brewery is located in the Dorset town of Bridport and has been brewing beer for over 200 years in the only thatched brewery still in use. Palmers produce a range of beers mainly for their pub estate but you can also find bottles in some independant shops along the south coast, however they refuse to sell to the supermarkets.
The tour lasts about 2 hours starting in the wine shop and heading into the old brewery where you get to see the full process from the grain store to the fermentation tanks. The guide was very informative and clearly has a passion for beer, brewing and Palmers, having working for them most of his life. At the end of the tour you head back to the shop where you can sample a couple of their different ales from a half pint tankard that you get to take home with you. All in all well worth the £10 admission fee.
If you’re a home brewer take a plastic pot or bag with you to get some yeast, they are more than happy for you to take some with you, unfortunately I didn’t have anything to put some in with me on the day. The tours run everyday at 11am but it’s recommended to book ahead which you can do on the Palmers Brewery website.
